Ask most fleet managers why they buy new tires instead of retreads and the answer is usually a gut feeling, not a number: retreads feel like the cheaper, riskier option. The actual data — from the Tire Industry Association (TIA), the Tire Retread & Repair Information Bureau (TRIB), and a landmark federal safety study — tells a more specific story, and it's one every retread shop should know cold before they're in front of a fleet buyer.

Purchase price isn't the number that matters

Comparing a retread's price tag to a new tire's price tag is the wrong comparison. A casing that's been engineered and built for multiple lives changes the math over its lifetime, not just at the register. That's why the industry standard comparison is cost-per-mile: total cost of ownership divided by the miles a tire (or a casing across several retreads) actually delivers.

On purchase price alone, a retread typically runs 30–50% below a comparable new tire, a gap repeated consistently across current trade coverage of the retread market. But that's just the opening number — the bigger effect compounds every time a quality casing goes through another retread cycle instead of being replaced outright.

What that adds up to across the industry

The scale of this is not a rounding error. TIA and TRIB put the fleet savings from retreading at close to $3 billion a year across the North American trucking industry. That's the aggregate effect of fleets choosing cost-per-mile over sticker price, casing by casing, tire by tire.

It shows up in adoption numbers too. TRIB managing director David Stevens has pointed out that almost 90% of fleets running 100 or more trucks use retreads — not because they're the cheapest option on the shelf, but because large fleets track cost-per-mile obsessively, and the data keeps pointing them back to retreading their drive and trailer casings rather than buying new every time.

For a retread shop, that adoption pattern is the sales case: the fleets already sold on retreading aren't small operators guessing — they're the ones with the tightest tire budgets and the best data to back the decision up.

The safety objection — what the data actually shows

The number-one objection retread shops still hear is some version of "retreads are the tire debris on the highway." It's a durable myth, and it's not what the evidence shows.

The most rigorous look at this is the federal Commercial Medium Tire Debris Study, which analyzed roughly 1,500 tire fragments and casings collected from highways across five states (Arizona, California, Florida, Indiana, and Virginia). Its conclusion: new and retreaded tires failed in proportion roughly equal to their share of tires on the road, and the study found no evidence of a systemic manufacturing or process issue with either OE or retreaded medium truck tires. The top reasons casings were pulled from service were road hazards (about 32%), maintenance and operational factors (about 30%), and over-deflected operation from underinflation (about 14%) — causes that apply just as much to a new tire as to a retread.

In other words: when a tire fails on the road, the data points to how it was maintained and loaded, not whether it started life as new rubber or a retreaded casing. That's the fact base behind TRIB and TIA's long-standing safety messaging, and it's the answer worth having ready any time a buyer raises the debris-on-the-highway objection.
